Originally marketed as "Modernique Homes" in 1948, The "Gregory Ain Mar Vista Tract remains one of the most significant and pioneering examples of mid-century modern tract housing in the United States. Designed by visionary architect Gregory Ain, in collaboration with a handful of other architects, this enclave brought high-design modernist principles to everyday, postwar family housing. Only 52 houses were built, located on 3 specific streets in Mar Vista. The homes are instantly recognizable by their low-pitched or flat roofs, wide overhanging eaves, and distinctive clerestory windows. The deep overhangs were functional, strategically shading the windows from the hot midday sun while still letting in natural light.
